Frequently Asked Questions

Why should I join the American Sewing Guild ?
To join with 20,000 other like minded lovers of sewing in the USA who want to promote the hobby, art and skill and to learn more.  Make new friends who already share one of your interests.  To expand, enjoy, laugh, grow.

What do I get from joining a neighborhood group?

Link with other guild members at a location that is convenient to you.  Share your skills, learn in an informal setting.

What if there isn't a neighborhood group near me?

Go to another or start one.  The Guild has some helpful documents to tell you what's involved, as well as people to help you along the way.  Most groups meet in a store nearby, or a library or other public location.  Some have met in homes, when the group is small enough.  Group sizes range from a handful to about a dozen.

What does the American Sewing Guild do to give back to the community?

Each year the National organization selects a simple project that can be managed by any sewer.  In 2009, the sewing guild chose to make pillowcases for the many Ronald McDonald houses in the USA.  The 2010 project is to make kit bags for the US service personnel.  The 2011 project is turtle pillow for the Painted Turtle camp in California.

Often a neighborhood group or a chapter will select a special project for a special charity in order to meet a specific need, or to expand the members' skills in a given area.  The CT Chapter has made quilts in 2009, as well as baby blankets, and fleece mittens to name a few items.  These are donated to either a hospital, a womens' shelter, or a soup kitchen, to name a few recipients.  In addition, individual members volunteer time and talent to support organizations of their choosing either alone or with a guild friend.

How active do I have to be in the American Sewing Guild to maintain my membership?
Pay your dues each year and choose your level of involvement:  just enjoy the publications and the discounts; serve on a short-term committee; attend local neighborhood group meetings; attend the national conference; accept and serve in a chapter advisory board position.  The choice is yours.

Whom do I contact to join the ASG and a neighborhood group?

First, go to the national website, www.asg.org and complete the application, either on line or print and mail it in.  The national organization will advise us at the local chapter when you join.  Shortly after, you will receive a welcoming letter from both the national headquarters in TX as well as our local membership chair.  You will see neighborhood groups listed in the chapter newsletter, and on line at this chapter website.  Join one, or more and attend any neighborhood group meeting anywhere in the USA.  It's up to you how many meetings you choose to attend, and where.
